South Africa is in for a surprise; conditions are set to change dramatically by the end of the week as a powerful weather system moves in. Warm and sunny conditions will dominate most of the country on Wednesday, 2 September 2026.

Gauteng can look forward to a fine, warm day, while Mpumalanga, Limpopo and the Lowveld will be warm to hot. The North West will also enjoy pleasant conditions, with some cloud building in the west later in the afternoon.

The pleasant spring weather will not last long, according to AccuWeather's latest 10-day weather forecast for Johannesburg. A powerful cut-off low is forecast to sweep through parts of the Western Cape, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape on Thursday and Friday, according to The South African Weather Service SAWS

The system is expected to bring significantly colder temperatures, heavy rainfall, damaging winds and rough coastal conditions. Residents in the affected provinces have been urged to stay informed as the system approaches and to take necessary precautions.

KwaZulu-Natal will be fine to partly cloudy and warm to hot on Wednesday, becoming very hot in the far northeast, with only isolated afternoon showers expected over the southwestern interior.

A 30% chance of showers and thundershowers has been forecast for the southern Free State, the eastern interior of the Northern Cape, much of the Eastern Cape and the southwestern parts of KwaZulu-Natal. Morning fog is expected in southern Eastern Cape districts before skies become partly cloudy and isolated showers develop through the afternoon.

The Western Cape will remain largely dry on Wednesday, though residents along the southern coastline can expect patches of morning mist and partly cloudy skies. Cool to warm temperatures are expected across the province.
