“Felt Like It Was a Human”: American Woman Attacked by Otter at Lake Tahoe, Suffers Serious Injuries

A Reno swim instructor broke her silence about a terrifying otter attack that left her bloodied and shaken. Lynette Bellon was swimming near Hidden Beach on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe on 1 September 2026 when the encounter turned violent without warning.

Bellon said she felt something clamp onto her leg and drag her beneath the surface with a force that shocked her.

"I just felt something grab me by my leg and pull me under, and it was so powerful, I felt like it was a human."

When she turned around, she came face to face with the otter. It lunged at her with teeth and claws, and her only instinct was to get away. But the animal would not let her go. She estimated she spent roughly five minutes trying to fend it off.

Otter follows Bellon onto the rocks

Even after Bellon tried to escape by climbing out of the water onto nearby rocks, the otter followed. She said, referring to her years of swimming training:

"It was just nothing I'd ever been coached for."

She managed to get about ten feet up the rocks before realising the animal was circling in the water below, breathing heavily and seemingly waiting for her to come back down.

She made her way back along the shore, covered in blood, and found authorities already on the scene. She believes a bystander had called emergency services on her behalf. At the hospital, she received 38 stitches and a course of rabies shots.
