The visit marked Day One of National Book Week, a campaign celebrating a love for reading and making literacy accessible and engaging for children across South Africa and the continent. Partnering with Literacy Roots, Qhawekazi chose to kick things off in Alexandra, one of Johannesburg's oldest townships.
The centrepiece of the visit was a reading session built around a local story which follows a young boy who discovers his talent for cricket by playing with three tins. Qhawekazi read the book in English, then repeated the story in a second language to make sure every child in the room could follow along and feel included.
After the reading, the children played a real game of cricket outside, living out the emotions of the character they had just heard about. Qhawekazi joined in, and by her own admission, got a little too invested in the game. She reflected on why moments like this matter:

"That's exactly what reading does for a child. It unlocks the ability to dream, to learn, and to see themselves represented in a way they don't on a typical day."
The library's facilities impressed her, and the children were warm and engaged throughout. Then Spring Day arrived, and the tone shifted entirely. The children doused her with water, and she eventually surrendered. Watch the Spring Day surprise unfold at the Alexandra library:
