“Sponsor Yourself”: Mzansi Slams Mama Joy After She Sets the Record Straight on Who Funds Her Trips

  • Mama Joy confirmed that most of her international trips to watch South African teams compete abroad were funded from her own pocket and not by the government
  • A government-funded trip to the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France only covered Paris, leaving Chauke to personally foot the bill for matches played in other cities
  • Chauke said the false belief that she is a millionaire has made her genuinely fear for her physical safety whenever she attends local matches in her own community

South Africa’s most beloved superfan has had enough of the rumours going around. Joy “Mama Joy” Chauke stood her ground and pushed back hard against the narrative that the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has been bankrolling her globe-trotting.

This came after Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie announced that the department would no longer fund superfans wanting to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament takes place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June this year. The news sent Chauke straight to social media, frustrated and feeling completely blindsided by the whole situation.

From Orlando to the world, on her own dime

Chauke made it clear that the rumours about her funding are simply not true. She confirmed that the only government-assisted trip she can recall was the 2023 Rugby World Cup held in France. Even then, the department only covered flights and accommodation within Paris itself and nothing beyond that.

Games played in cities like Marseille and Bordeaux were an entirely different story for her. She paid for those trips out of her own wallet without any assistance from the state whatsoever.
