Working Son Annoyed After Mum Starts Charging Him Monthly Rent for Living at Her House

Johnny, a 25-year-old working son, expressed frustration after his mother asked him to start paying rent for living in her house.

Having paid $60 (about R1 125) a week for a few years, Johnny recently secured a permanent position at a new job that pays well.

Johnny accuses mother of overcharging him

However, he went to Reddit to complain that his mother, who wanted to give him a little more responsibility, had informed him that the rent would increase to $150 (R2810) weekly.

Johnny says he feels the new rent was too high for what he was getting and is considering moving out.

He added that the rent increase was unjustified because he pays for his meals and occupies only a small bedroom in his parents' house.

"I can rent a studio apartment three or four times the size of my room for a few hundred more, or could rent a room with friends for less than what mum is trying to charge me," he lamented.

Expressing his disappointment, Johnny mentioned that he rarely interacted with his parents besides when getting off work.

"If I am paying $600 a month I think I would deserve my own spaces around the house also as I would with a landlord," he expressed.

Johnny's decision to move out has upset his mother, but he firmly believes the rent increase was unreasonable.

He reiterated that, based on the turn of events, having a landlord would be a better deal for him.

Previously, Briefly News reported that a young South African woman shared a moving testimony of how she managed to pick herself up and improve her life. She was kicked out of her house by a roommate.

"I become so emotional when I think two years back; I was once stranded with no place to go after a roommate kicked me out," she said.

The inspiring woman then said she remembers crying, sitting on the pavement for two hours with no plan until her grandmother said find a place, even if it means sleeping on the floor.
