After taking a leap of faith and moving from the US to Cape Town, a couple had second thoughts about their new home after a visit to another coastal city.

Their online video, shared on TikTok by @yourrecruiterza, sparked a lively debate among South Africans, with many sharing their opinions about the two cities.

The man and his wife are sitting at a hotel close to the beach in Durban when he starts questioning whether he made a mistake moving to Cape Town instead of Durban. The wife immediately interjects, saying yes, they had. He openly admits his love for his home in Cape Town, but expresses a stronger affection for Durban, praising its people as friendlier, its food better, and its overall vibe as dope.

SA offers advice to the couple

The couple's video generated massive views, likes, and comments, with South Africans offering a mixed bag of advice. Many encouraged the couple to stay in Cape Town, emphasising the city's well-maintained infrastructure and more efficient municipality. They also warned the couple about the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) floods, a significant concern in the region.

Others, however, passionately argued for Durban. They advised the couple that if they were looking for a true "South African experience," Durban was the place to be. They argued that Cape Town felt more like a European city, lacking the strong and vibrant culture that Durban is known for. Some also highlighted that KZN boasted some of the country’s best schools, suggesting Durban was a great place to raise a family.

"I’m from Durban, born and bred here. I’ve lived in Cape Town for seven years, but maybe here’s why I chose Durban over Cape Town: If you’re thinking of relocating, Durban offers some major advantages over Cape Town. It’s more affordable in terms of rent, food, and lifestyle costs, making it ideal for families and entrepreneurs. The weather is warmer and more consistent year-round, with less wind and no harsh winters. Durban also has a strong local culture, a relaxed pace of life, and fewer crowds, giving you a more grounded, community-driven environment."

User @raziashaik937 commented:

"I'm from Durban. I say stay in Cape Town, in Durban, the municipality doesn't deliver services. Often, we have water cuts. Our roads are full of potholes. The crime rate is sky high."

User @Blessedandfavoured shared:

"Cape Town has been voted one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The scenery is spectacular, and it's a bit pricier than Durban, though. The food in Durban is great; you have to live in a fancy area in Durban to enjoy Durban. It's also quick to get around in Durban, and there's hardly traffic."

"Durban has no winter."

User @joe advised:

"You moved out of the US, great move. Be a Mzansi nomad, have the best of all. The only negative in CPT is the weather. KZN is Jumanji, it's great for a weekend once in a while."
