A small gesture, a big impact

For many, this was proof that teaching is about more than lessons and homework; it’s about building relationships and showing care. The act was simple, but it carried meaning beyond the food itself.

Online users responded with admiration for the teacher’s kindness, saying that gestures like these left lasting memories for children. The video didn’t just show food being shared; it highlighted the bond between a teacher and her pupils. In an era where many stories focus on challenges in education, this moment provided a refreshing reminder of compassion in the classroom.

Simkana Menzi explained that for many children, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, simple gestures like a meal go much further than people realise. He said these moments often make learners see teachers as role models, since the care shown extends beyond academics. He explained:

"Small gestures like buying meals impact learners in the best ways possible because some of the learners are from disadvantaged backgrounds, and they hardly get these treats from their parents. So when they get this from teachers, it means a lot to them. They view teachers as their role models and heroes because they are motivated by the acts of kindness these teachers offer and the fact that teachers not only nurture them academically but holistically as well."

Menzi also highlighted that these moments are not just memorable for learners but also for the public watching them. He said they reflect the Ubuntu spirit, showing how today’s teachers are stepping in to support children who may not always find love and care at home. He noted:

"In my experience, these acts of kindness resonate strongly with learners and the public because Umntu ngumntu ngabantu. This generation of teachers shows up for learners in ways people thought were impossible. Most of our learners are from broken homes; they long for love and support. When a teacher gives such to learners, it makes them feel seen and important, hence they resonate."

Looking ahead, Menzi said that if resources were more available, schools could go beyond food and provide lasting rewards like uniforms and technology to empower learners in the modern world. He added:

"If resources weren’t limited, teachers could celebrate learners at the end of the term by gifting them uniforms and technological resources such as tablets and computers for learning. Times have changed; we are in the 21st century, where everything is done digitally, even the Department of Gauteng is piloting a new subject called Coding and Robotics, which requires technological resources. That is why I am saying these would be the best rewards at the end of the term for the learners."
