The teenagers prank a taxi driver

When the door is fully open, all three suddenly run away from the stationary taxi, leaving the driver and passengers stunned. The absurdity of the scenario is apparent. TikTok user @vester2197's clip then transitions to a selfie video of two of the trio, looking exhausted, with no sign of the third one.

Others, however, warned that some drivers were aggressive and might chase them

Boys will be boys

We at Briefly News spoke with local taxi driver Nduna to get a peer's perspective on the viral video and to discuss how impolite passenger behaviour affects the driver and the other commuters, even as a joke.

The team asked Nduna what his initial thought was when he saw the boys opening the taxi door, leaving it open and running away afterwards. He shared:

“It is pure disrespect. The open door can cause delays, especially if there’s no one sitting next to it, as a passenger may have to move from the back to close it. It is worse if the driver hasn’t picked up any people, as he would have to stop the taxi, get off and close the door. We work with time, and any minute wasted is a loss of money.”

We asked if the driver thinks the “boys will be boys” statement excuses the teenagers for their behaviour. Nduna said:

“No, it’s not fair. When you are on the road, you must respect the rules and other people's safety. When a prank is dangerous and delays everyone, it is not just being a “boy,” it is being irresponsible.”

We asked his advice to young people who use taxis and want to film content or jokes while they are commuting. The taxi driver responded:

“Be respectful of the driver and other passengers. If you want to joke, make sure it is funny to everyone, and not just you.”

SA reacts with amusement

The video quickly went viral, attracting 3M views, 68K likes, and 1.4K comments from social media users who were in stitches. Many viewers admitted that they did not expect the teenagers to run away, finding the prank hilarious. Some viewers noted that Gen Zs were not scared of anything or anyone, highlighting their bold approach to humour. Others, putting themselves in the driver's shoes, said that while the act was hilarious, they would have been worried about aggressive drivers.
