A Free State millionaire has South Africa talking after he and his wife placed a newspaper advert looking for a second woman to join their marriage, offering R20 million in estate and R1 million in lobola to the bride's family.

Western Cape content creator CoolStoryBruu shared the story on 16 August 2026, breaking it down in a selfie-style video that quickly gained traction for all the right reasons.

The man at the centre of the story is 58-year-old Gerrit, who placed the advert in the Bergen newspaper. His wife of 25 years is apparently not only aware of the search but is actively involved in it. Her one condition? The new wife must know how to make a good braai broodjie.

Gerrit's advert raises red flags

While the premise alone was enough to stop scrollers in their tracks, it was the specific requirements in the advert that shifted the mood from amused to concerned. Gerrit stated he is looking for a young bride between the ages of 16 and 25. She must be, in his words, pure, a non-smoker, and obedient.

He explained that his motivation is to have children with a younger wife so he can pass on his inheritance. He also cited his interpretation of old biblical principles as the foundation for his decision.

In South Africa, polygamous marriages are legally recognised, but only under African customary law. A man married under civil law cannot take a second wife unless the first marriage ends. Those who do qualify under customary law must submit a written contract to a court, which protects the financial rights of all wives involved.
