South Africa is mourning the loss of Sidney Miller, the beloved homeless man whose story of hardship and unexpected kindness moved an entire nation. Cape Town content creator and ultra runner Chad Nathan, known online as @gingerwithagopro, broke the news on 25 September 2026, describing it as an "untimely passing."
Nathan wrote that the details surrounding Sidney's death had not yet been confirmed, and asked the public to respect both his own privacy and that of Sidney's family during what he called an "incredibly difficult time."
How Uncle Sidney captured South Africa's heart
The story began in May 2026, during a severe storm along the Sea Point promenade in Cape Town. Nathan came across Sidney struggling to push his wheelchair through the rain and helped him navigate four kilometres to a bus stop where he had been sleeping. Nathan shared the encounter online, and the response was overwhelming.

Donations poured in, eventually surpassing R500,000. Organisations including The Angel Network, The Sweethearts Foundation, and Souper Troopers joined the effort. With those funds, Sidney received clothing, a custom electric wheelchair, medical attention for a leg amputation, and cataract surgeries through the Atlantic Eye Foundation that restored his sight.
In just a few months, a man who had been invisible to most of the world became someone all of South Africa knew by name.
Chad Nathan to run the Otter Trail in Sidney's memory
Nathan shared that he was at the Otter Trail when he made the announcement on his Instagram page, and that he intended to complete the iconic run in Sidney's honour.
"I am personally in complete shock and grief and am struggling to come to terms with this loss," he wrote.
