From Mamelodi to the world
“I couldn’t have done it without the cemented foundation of my love for Maths and Science from my early childhood”
Mokwena’s journey in STEM began in her hometown in Mamelodi, where her high school Physical Sciences teacher inspired her to fall in love with Mathematics and Science.
“Growing up, I never thought that I was going to pursue a career in science, but all changed when I was in High School through my physical sciences teacher, Mr Mawire.
Through his guidance and support, he ignited a passion for science within me. He would take us to science fairs and exhibitions such as Eskom Expo for young scientists, in which we got inspiration and motivation,"
Mokwena was also part of the Kutlwanong Promaths Program, which enhanced her understanding and performance in Physical Sciences and Mathematics.
“Overall, it was an incredible experience and that in turn accelerated my academic growth and prepared me for the challenges that were ahead.
It is worth mentioning that I couldn’t have achieved this without the unwavering support from my family, as they encouraged me, believed in me and pushed me to reach my full potential,” Mokwena noted.
Dealing with life challenges
Life can throw a curveball at any moment, and for the young scientist, hers was overcoming the loss of her father and little sister. But this was not going to stop her from achieving her goals.
“Through faith, hard work, and determination, I've navigated life's challenges, including the loss of my father and little sister, which once felt insurmountable. Yet, with God's guidance, I've achieved remarkable milestones.”Mokwena was also part of the Kutlwanong Promaths Program, which enhanced her understanding and performance in Physical Sciences and Mathematics. From MSC graduate to PHD candidate at 26
The journey with academia has not yet ended for Mokwena, as she is currently a PhD candidate in Chemistry at the University of South Africa. Mokwena is ready to build a strong foundation in research and expertise, where she plans to blend her knowledge into industry through collaborative efforts, driving innovation and practical applications.
While noting the challenges facing young black women in STEM, she says that to break down barriers for young women in STEM, several strategies can be implemented, including promoting STEM education and awareness, providing mentorship and role models, and facilitating networking opportunities.
She further encouraged young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to explore opportunities with passion and always seek guidance.
“The most important thing is to explore, find what you love, and pursue it with passion. Whether it's medicine, environmental science, coding, or engineering, there's a place for you in all disciplines. And remember, it's a journey, not a destination. Take it one step at a time, and don't be afraid to try new things.”
