PRETORIA, GAUTENG — The Presidency hit back after National Commissioner General Fannie Masejmola said that President Cyril Ramaphosa knew about, and approved, the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT). He spoke during his testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on 23 September 2025 in Tshwane, Gauteng.
Masemola testified at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College. It was his second day as the second witness to provide testimony. Masemola said that he had a meeting with suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and raised the issue of the disbandment of the PKTT. Masemola said that Mchunu was visibly angry.
Mchunu implicates Ramaphosa
Masemola said that after the meeting, Mchunu said he would only talk to Masemola. He added that the President agreed that the Political Killings Task Team be disbanded. Masemola said that he was surprised at that revelation, as Ramaphosa requested that the PKTT assist with the investigations into the deaths that occurred at Fort Hare University.

What did the Presidency say?
The Presidency responded to the allegations. Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said that the Presidency would not respond to the evidence in a piecemeal fashion. H said that the president would look at the entirety of the evidence before responding.

Fannie Masemola discusses Cat Matlala
In a related article, Briefly News reported that Masemola revealed details about a conversation he had with a whistleblower. The whistleblower highlighted aspects of attempted murderer-accused Vusimusi Matlala's connections to the police.
Masemola said the whistleblower informed him that Matlala had powers equal to the suspended Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya. He added that Matlala had the power to order police to do as he wished.
