Horror Crash on N2 Claims Lives of Five Family Members in KwaZulu-Natal

A KwaZulu-Natal family has been shattered after five of its members were killed in a head-on collision in Umzumbe on the south coast.

KZN crash leaves 5 dead

According to authorities in KwaZulu-Natal, the horrific head-on collision occurred on Friday night, 14 November 2025, on the N2 before the Umzumbe River bridge in KZN.

Authorities said the crash involved a Suzuki light motor vehicle and a seven-seater minibus. The Road Traffic Inspectorate said three children, aged 3 to 5, and two adults, believed to be the mother and father, died instantly. Other passengers in the two vehicles, a female and a 14-year-old male, were seriously injured and rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.

The MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, has expressed condolences to the families and assigned a team to liaise with local leaders.

Arrive Alive CEO John Jonck told Briefly News what patterns and persistent risk factors he believes authorities need to address on these routes. He said:

“Sadly, South Africans often fail to adjust their driving in adverse weather conditions. It’s crucial that motorists reduce speed, switch their lights on, and increase following distances.”

Other vehicle accidents in 2025

At least 17 people were injured in an accident involving 12 vehicles in Krugersdorp, Gauteng, on 28 August 2025. According to eNCA, a truck lost control and could not brake on Hendrick Potgieter Road and collided with another truck. The collision caused a pile-up in which 18 vehicles were involved. The road was closed for the morning, and fortunately, no fatalities were recorded.

19 Children were injured when a taxi driver crashed into a wall in Chatsworth, KwaZulu-Natal. The accident happened in the afternoon of 26 August 205. The children, who are aged between four and 12, sustained various injuries in the accident. The taxi was transporting children home from school when the driver lost control of the taxi. He crashed into the wall of a nearby building. Paramedics rushed to the scene, and members of the community assisted in contacting the parents.

Six people were killed in a horrific Mpumalanga accident between two trucks on the R42 on 18 August 2025. The accident happened when two trucks collided with each other near Delmas. One of the vehicles was stationary when the other truck rammed into its rear.

A deadly collision occurred on Comaro Road, between Tarentaal Avenue and Pieter Acryod Avenue, south of Johannesburg, on Wednesday, 29 October 2025. The crash, involving a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi and a bakkie, left seven people dead. Multiple injuries were reported, and Comaro Road has been closed in both directions, with motorists diverted at Pieter Acryod Avenue and Soetdoring Avenue, Johannesburg.

Eastern Cape paramedic and patient dies in crash

Briefly News also reported that an Eastern Cape paramedic and a patient tragically lost their lives in a vehicle accident on Monday, 13 October 2025. It is alleged that the ambulance was travelling towards Dordrecht in the Eastern Cape.
