Minibus and Car Crash on R26 Leaves 3 Dead, Several Injured in Free State

The Free State has been hit by another deadly road accident, bringing the number of reported fatal crashes in the province to two this weekend.

3 Killed in Free State crash

The deadly collision on the R26 near Van Standensrus, just outside Zastron in the Free State, has claimed the lives of three people and left 12 others injured early on Sunday morning, 16 November 2025. The crash, which involved a minibus and a light motor vehicle, occurred roughly 4 km before the town.

Emergency crews were dispatched at around 05:30 and found both vehicles damaged. Paramedics assessed multiple patients on the scene before transporting the injured to Embekweni Hospital in Zastron for further treatment.

According to responders, the road has been partially closed to allow emergency teams to work safely, resulting in delays in the area. Motorists travelling between Zastron and Van Standensrus have been urged to slow down, follow officials' instructions, and consider alternative routes if possible.

RIMS chairperson Sipho Tiwo confirmed the incident in a statement to Briefly News. He said:

"The collision occurred on the R26, approximately 4 km before Van Standensrus from Zastron. Motorists are advised to exercise caution and follow instructions from authorities. Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic accident."

Other vehicle accidents in 2025

A KwaZulu-Natal family has been shattered after five of its members were killed in a head-on collision in Umzumbe on the south coast. According to authorities in KwaZulu-Natal, the horrific head-on collision occurred on Friday night, 14 November 2025, on the N2 before the Umzumbe River bridge in KZN. Authorities said the crash involved a Suzuki light motor vehicle and a seven-seater minibus. The Road Traffic Inspectorate said three children, aged 3 to 5, and two adults, believed to be the mother and father, died instantly.

At least 17 people were injured in an accident involving 12 vehicles in Krugersdorp, Gauteng, on 28 August 2025. According to eNCA, a truck lost control and could not brake on Hendrick Potgieter Road and collided with another truck. The collision caused a pile-up in which 18 vehicles were involved. The road was closed for the morning, and fortunately, no fatalities were recorded.

A deadly collision occurred on Comaro Road, between Tarentaal Avenue and Pieter Acryod Avenue, south of Johannesburg, on Wednesday, 29 October 2025. The crash, involving a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi and a bakkie, left seven people dead. Multiple injuries were reported, and Comaro Road has been closed in both directions, with motorists diverted at Pieter Acryod Avenue and Soetdoring Avenue, Johannesburg.

School children injured in taxi crash

Briefly News also reported that 19 children were injured when a taxi driver crashed into a wall in Chatsworth, KwaZulu-Natal. The accident happened in the afternoon of 26 August 205. The children, who are aged between four and 12, sustained various injuries in the accident.

The taxi was transporting children home from school when the driver lost control of the taxi. He crashed into the wall of a nearby building. Paramedics rushed to the scene, and members of the community assisted in contacting the parents.
