KZN Traffic Sweep Sees 226 Motorists Arrested Over Weekend

Over the weekend, the KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate conducted the NenzaniLaEzweni Operation, resulting in the arrest of 226 motorists as part of efforts to enforce traffic laws and improve road safety across the province.

226 motorists arrested in KZN

According to a statement by KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, on Sunday, 16 November 2025, the NenzaniLaEzweni Operation has successfully improved road safety in the province, with a noted decrease in fatalities over three months in 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.

Duma highlighted that over the weekend, a total of 226 motorists were arrested across Esikhawini, Empangeni, and Richards Bay as part of the ongoing operation. He said that 113 were arrested on Friday and Saturday morning, and another 113 on Saturday night and Sunday morning. Among those arrested were a truck driver, a doctor, a police officer, a correctional services officer, a firefighter, a pastor, two educators, and a student who had assaulted a traffic officer.

80 Speeding fines

He noted that the operation also resulted in the issuance of 80 speeding fines totalling R40,000, six summonses totalling R5,300, and charges amounting to R15,800. Duma said that since 15 August 2025, the Road Traffic Inspectorate has arrested more than 1,326 motorists for drunk driving.

The MEC noted that more than 15 undocumented foreign truck drivers have been convicted and are serving sentences at Pietermaritzburg Correctional Services Centre, after which they will be deported by the Home Affairs Immigration Unit.

He praised the dedication of the Road Traffic Inspectorate, SAPS, and health personnel, and expressed appreciation for public support in combating drunk driving. Duma stressed that the operation is part of a broader effort to restore law and order on KZN’s roads ahead of the festive season and beyond.
