KwaZulu-Natal TikToker @mzotho_01 posted a video of printed price stickers from Shoprite on Ryder Street in Port Shepstone showing a Loaf Chilli BMS polony tagged at a jaw-dropping R851.84. The label carried the Shoprite branding, leaving no doubt about where it came from.

The post spread quickly, with thousands of South Africans stopping to stare at the numbers on the screen and ask the same question: how does a slice of polony cost more than a monthly grocery haul?

Polony, the new luxury item?

For many South Africans, polony is the affordable staple that has kept lunchboxes and braai rolls going for generations. Seeing it priced like a designer handbag hit differently, and the comment section became a comedy stage almost immediately.

Some guessed a till system glitch was behind the bizarre number. Others joked that someone at the store was about to have a very bad day at work, with one of the most popular reactions being that somebody was getting fired over this one.
