SOUTH AFRICA — The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued active severe weather warnings ahead of a cold front forecast to sweep through the country by Sunday, 30 August 2026.
The warnings, issued on 27 August 2026, cover two Yellow Level 2 impact-based alerts for Friday, 28 August. The first concerns damaging winds and rough seas along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline between Port Edward and Richards Bay, posing direct risks to small harbour operations, maritime navigation, and coastal infrastructure. The second targets strong crosswinds across the Namakwa District in the Northern Cape and the Central Karoo District in the Western Cape, where high-sided vehicles on exposed routes face severe hazards.
Fire danger and regional conditions on Friday
Alongside the wind alerts, SAWS has flagged extremely high fire danger conditions across parts of the western Northern Cape, north-eastern Western Cape, and western Eastern Cape. Hot and windy conditions are driving the elevated risk in those areas.

Regional weather on Friday reflects a mixed but largely unsettled picture. Gauteng, North West, and the Free State can expect cool to warm conditions under partly cloudy skies, with fog patches possible in the extreme eastern Free State during the early morning. Mpumalanga and Limpopo face similar morning fog along the escarpment, accompanied by isolated showers in the east.
In the Western and Northern Cape, very high UVB sunburn indices remain in effect despite morning coastal fog, while inland areas in the West Coast and Central Karoo are set to experience hot conditions before winds shift south-westerly. The Eastern Cape will see warm to hot weather, with isolated afternoon thundershowers likely in the south-east.
Cold front to arrive by Sunday
Forecast outlooks for Saturday and Sunday point to a significant atmospheric shift. Saturday carries widespread cool to warm conditions across most provinces, but Sunday's outlook indicates a pronounced cold spell descending over the southern coastal belt and interior high-ground regions.
Cloud boundaries, sharply dropping temperatures, and rainfall probabilities ranging between 30% isolated and 60% scattered are expected across the south and centre of the country by 30 August. The cold front arrives weeks after a widespread snowfall event blanketed parts of South Africa, underscoring what has been an active late-winter weather period for the country.
