NORTHERN CAPE —"I felt deeply hurt and betrayed." Those were the words of a 42-year-old single mother after her 22-year-old son was handed a 20-year prison sentence by the Carnarvon Regional Court in the Northern Cape for raping her while she slept. The sentencing took place two weeks after another court in the province sentenced a man for raping a woman in front of her toddler.
In a Victim Impact Statement compiled with court preparation officers, she detailed enduring psychological trauma and severe sleep disruption. According to IOL, the incident occurred late last November. The complainant had gone to sleep after consuming alcohol with her partner. The offender, returning home intoxicated from a friend's house, entered the dwelling, removed his mother's clothes, and assaulted her. Waking up mid-attack, she confronted her son, prompting him to run away. She alerted her partner immediately, leading to a police report.
Forensics Force Change of Plea
While the suspect initially maintained his innocence during preliminary questioning, mandatory forensic testing yielded conclusive DNA evidence linking him directly to the crime. National Prosecuting Authority representative Mojalefa Senokoatsane confirmed that the combination of physical evidence and the victim's testimony ultimately compelled the perpetrator to change his plea to guilty.

Prosecutor Xolisa March pressed for strict punitive measures, emphasizing that the offender targeted a helpless victim and breached a core familial trust. The prosecution highlighted that the crime was committed shortly after the offender had been granted parole for a prior property-related offence.
