GAUTENG —Law enforcement officers in Vanderbijlpark have launched a formal investigation following the discovery of an infant's body concealed in garbage in Bophelong Extension 15. The discovery happened weeks after a teenager was found dead in a pit in the North West.
According to Sedibeng Ster, local police spokesperson Sergeant Sabelo Sigcu verified that authorities registered a case of concealment of birth after detectives secured the site on 31 August. The identity of the mother and the precise circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
The incident came to light during the early morning when a local resident, searching for recyclable tins, picked up a plastic bag to store her collection. Finding the outer package unexpectedly heavy, she unsealed it to reveal a tied Checkers grocery bag inside. Upon opening the second layer, she discovered the deceased child.
"When I opened the plastic bag to see what was inside, I found another Checkers bag which was fastened and heavy. I opened it too, and to my surprise, there was a baby inside," she recounted.

The distressed waste picker fled to raise an alarm among nearby households, prompting scores of community members to gather at the scene prior to the arrival of police units.
