JOHANNESBURG — Surveillance footage from a Lenasia convenience store has gone viral on X after capturing a brazen armed robbery in which a Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer was disarmed at gunpoint by three suspects on 2 September 2026.

The clip was shared on X by crime reporter Yusuf Abramjee and was originally posted by user @Ndlombango. It shows interior store footage timestamped "2026-09," recorded near the entrance and checkout counter of an unnamed shop in Lenasia during the evening.

Two male suspects enter the store and move out of the camera's frame, deeper into the shop. Seconds later, a JMPD officer walks in from the same direction and approaches the counter.

The two suspects return almost immediately, and one of them confronts the officer directly, drawing a firearm and pointing it at him. The officer drops to his knees with both hands raised. A third suspect then emerges from within the store and proceeds to search the officer, removing his service firearm. All three suspects exit the shop.

Moments later, the armed suspect re-enters and appears to communicate something to the officer, who keeps his hands raised throughout. The suspect then leaves for the final time. The officer was not physically harmed during the incident.

The video drew an immediate response on social media, with many users expressing relief that the officer survived while raising broader concerns about police safety and firearm awareness.

"A reminder to responsible firearm owners, keep that firearm properly concealed and out of sight. If someone is willing to attack an officer, they won't hesitate to kill an ordinary civilian. Don't make yourself an easy target."
