SOUTH AFRICA — The National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Andy Mothibi has instructed that charges against suspended National Police Commission General Fannie Masemola be dropped. The decision came less than a month after Mothibi appointed a review panel on 28 August 2026 to assess the charges against Masemola. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed on 19 August after the NPA appeared before the Standing Committee on Public Accounts

eNCA journalist Pule Letshwiti-Jones posted the announcement on his X account on 15 September 2026. Masemola was charged with contravening the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) in relation to the controversial Medicare24 tender. The panel consisted of officials from the Special Investigating Unit and senior members of the NPA.

Masemola was suspended in connection to the R360 million tender awarded to attempted murder suspect and alleged cartel boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. He previously stated after his first court appearance in Pretoria on 21 April that he was innocent and he welcomed the investigation into the allegations.
