KWAZULU-NATAL — The Economic Freedom Fighters has opened a criminal case at Inanda Police Station against media personality Ngizwe Mchunu, alleging that Mchunu and his bodyguards fired shots at EFF volunteers ahead of the party's scheduled Provincial Manifesto launch.

The incident took place in Inanda, where two events were set to run in proximity: the EFF's Saturday manifesto launch at JL Dube Stadium and Mchunu's Bhinca Heritage and Maskandi Festival at a nearby venue.

Following the heated clash, the EFF members made their way to the police station where they sought to open a case.

Mongezi Twala warns EFF will defend itself

Speaking about the incident, the party's KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Chairperson, Mongezi Twala, issued a stern warning to Mchunu. He described the incident as a serious escalation against the party.

"They came and shot at our innocent fighters. If the police are not going to defend us here, we have no choice but to defend ourselves as fighters," he said.

Twala insisted that the party had applied for the necessary permissions for its event and maintained that its members were committed to remaining peaceful. He nonetheless made clear that the EFF would not abandon its rally, saying no one would declare KZN and Inanda a no-go zone for the party.

Mchunu denies firing at EFF members

Mchunu rejected the EFF's version of events, stating that his group was provoked by EFF supporters before the confrontation escalated. The incident is set against the backdrop of a well-documented and long-running public feud between Mchunu and EFF President Julius Malema.
