LIMPOPO — Community violence erupted in Rita Village, Limpopo, after an elderly resident was killed outside her home, leaving two people dead in a single afternoon on 24 September 2026. The incident happened in the same week after a man in Limpopo was arrested for allegedly killing his mother.
The South African Police Service in the Mopani District confirmed that a 77-year-old woman succumbed to an upper-body knife wound in the Maake area. Preliminary inquiries identified a 45-year-old local resident as the primary suspect. The man escaped into adjacent mountainous terrain as law enforcement vehicles approached the initial crime scene.
Tensions mounted across the village until residents tracked down the suspect several hours later. The crowd launched an attack, inflicting fatal injuries on the man before police could intervene. Paramedics confirmed both fatalities at their respective scenes.
Provincial Commissioner condemns incident
Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers denounced the brutal sequence of events, cautioning the public against vigilante violence. Scheepers stressed that retaliatory killings undermine criminal justice processes and told residents to let law enforcement handle suspect apprehensions. Detectives under Sergeant Khanyisa Chauke have opened double homicide dockets, requesting eyewitnesses to contact Maake SAPS, call Crime Stop, or log leads via the official mobile application.

Bredasdorp woman beaten to death
