Thabang, an 18-year-old matric student from Johannesburg, stood at a traffic light in Fourways holding a handwritten sign that read "matric dance donations" alongside a phone number. He was alone, dressed in his school uniform, and hoping someone would stop.
What nobody knew yet was how far that moment would travel.
A young man living alone
Thabang's situation went far deeper than needing a suit and a ticket. As TikToker Vuyisa Sigonyela later discovered after spending a day with him, the teenager was living entirely on his own in Johannesburg, without stable housing or enough money for food. Despite everything, he refused to drop out of school. Vuyisa shared on TikTok:

"I got to spend a day with Thabang and learned so much about him. I was moved to find out that he lives alone in Johannesburg and didn't want to quit school even with his difficult circumstances. He is such a special and sweet young man."
Thabang had been standing at robots for weeks with limited success before Vuyisa spotted him in late August 2026 and decided to film the encounter.
South Africa shows up
The TikTok video spread rapidly, drawing more than 3 million views. What followed was a wave of generosity that went far beyond what Thabang had hoped for. One man sent his own wedding suit. Others pooled money for shoes. Volunteers offered to drive him to and from the event. A photographer stepped forward to capture the night for free. Someone promised to bake him a cake. Another person offered to cover his date's dress, makeup, and one night away.
By 24 September 2026, Thabang was ready. The getting-ready video Vuyisa shared showed him dressed up and smiling, a world away from that traffic light.
