GAUTENG — The National Prosecuting Authority has confirmed it will investigate the recording played during Shadrack Sibiya's bail hearing at the Randburg Magistrates' Court on 20 October 2026, which captured a conversation between Serge Cabonge and a man referred to only as "Mr M."

NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago addressed reporters outside the court following the conclusion of Sibiya's bail application, telling the media that the conversation between Cabonge and Mr M was among several issues the magistrate flagged as requiring further scrutiny.

What the recording contained

The roughly 25-minute audio, played during proceedings, captured Cabonge making a series of claims about his relationship with Sibiya and others connected to the case.

Cabonge also alleged that Sibiya had asked him to borrow R200,000 while the former police general was in custody. He also made allegations about a figure linked to the Madlanga Commission, but the Commission has rejected these as false and incoherent.

Magistrate raises concerns over Mr M

During the hearing, the presiding magistrate noted that she found it "very bizarre" that Mr M was found in possession of photographs of a disturbing nature involving his own daughter. The defence also raised questions about Mr M's role in the matter overall.

Kganyago confirmed that the NPA was aware of these concerns and that they would form part of the broader investigation as well.

Briefly News reported that the Political Killings Task Team launched an investigation into Cabonge, bringing him in for questioning.

The probe into Cabonge follows an audio recording played during Shadrack Sibiya's bail hearing, in which Cabonge allegedly claimed to have police connections.

South Africans weighed in on the news, with some noting that Cabonge brought it on himself by bragging about his influence.
