Cristiano Ronaldo and Ronaldo Nazario also made the top 10, as did George Best, Germany's Franz Beckenbauer, and Diego Maradona.

On social media, the debate is centred around Messi and Ronaldo. The Portuguese superstar has scored 900 career goals, more than any other player. The only trophy missing in his cabin net is the World Cup.

However, Messi's World Cup win gives him an edge in the eyes of many football fans.

Ronaldo Nazario names football GOATs

A few years ago, Ronaldo Nazario listed four players he considered the best in football history.

"For me, in the classification of the best in history, the four names would be Pele, [Diego] Maradona, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo," he said via Sportbible. They are the top four in the history of football."

Before Messi and Ronaldo hit the scene, Maradona and Pele were considered the GOATs. The two South American icons won World Cups during their playing days and captured the hearts and minds of fans all over the world.

Pele died in 2022 after a long battle with cancer, while Maradona died in 2020, per BBC.

Scholes picks between Messi and Ronaldo

Briefly News earlier reported that Manchester United legend Paul Scholes named his GOAT between Messi and Ronaldo.

Scholes believes Ronaldo still falls short of Messi, his longtime competitor, because he is a more complete footballer.
