Former Orlando Pirates star Mark Mayambela has decided to dump a Premier Soccer League side for a move to Mamelodi Sundowns this summer.

The former Bloemfontein Celtic left winger has been appointed as the Brazilians’ new Under-15 head coach before the new season kicks off in their division.

Mayambela joins Sundowns with good managerial qualifications

According to reports, Mayambela joins the Premier Soccer League giants after parting ways with Cape Town City FC, where he also served as a development coach.

Following the Blue and Gold Army’s relegation from the Betway Premiership to the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season, the former Bucs winger made the move to Sundowns.

At Sundowns, he will collaborate with youth mentor Sam Mbatha at Bafana Ba Style, with high hopes of developing the next generation of football stars in the South African league.

The coaching duo was recently seen at the Gauteng Development League (GDL) matches held on Saturday, 23 August 2025, at Christ Church Preparatory School and College in Midrand, Johannesburg.

Mayambela is coming to Mamelodi Sundowns with a world-class coaching qualification, as he recently completed his UEFA A Coaching Diploma in the United Kingdom.

During his time with Cape Town City’s development side, the Cape Town-born tactician won four titles: the Under-16 FTIFA Cup twice (in 2022 and 2025), the Moment Cup in 2024, and the Engen Knockout Challenge with the U-18s in 2022.

Mayambela is joining the Brazilians with a highly commendable coaching CV and would be aiming to build on his impressive track record as a youth mentor with the PSL giants and make an immediate impact at the club.

Sundowns have now gained one over Pirates after the Sea Robbers also signed former Masandawana midfielder Sipho Mbule this summer, and also knocked them out of the MTN8 competition.

Mayambela's move to Mamelodi Sundowns gathered reactions from netizens and Masandawana's fans on social media.
