Former Free State Stars winger Yusuf Jappie has lifted the lid on dressing room life in South African football, revealing that he was once coerced into participating in a muti ritual before a match against Kaizer Chiefs.
Speaking in an interview published on 10 August 2026, Jappie, now 31 and training with an ABC Motsepe League side in Cape Town, described the incident as one of the more unusual moments of his career.
Jappie Pressured Into Muti Ritual
Jappie, who does not personally believe in muti due to his religion, said a club he played for gave him little choice but to participate. He recalled standing in a shower holding what appeared to be a two-litre bottle of Coca-Cola, which contained something else entirely.
"I didn't want to use it, but they warned me, 'If you don't want to do it, we will tell the boss!'" he said.
He was instructed to wash his arms from his elbows to his hands, his legs from his knees to his feet, and also his face. The team went on to win that match against Kaizer Chiefs 2-1.

Jappie said his best football came during his time at Free State Stars, where coaches encouraged the players to express themselves freely on the pitch.

Reflecting on his broader career, Jappie described signing a professional contract at 18 with Bidvest Wits, under coach Gavin Hunt, as his greatest personal milestone to date.
He named Kiyaam Bull, a former teammate at La Masia from Cape Town, as the player who was most consistently late for training, often citing tiredness or oversleeping as his excuse.
On the lighter side of dressing room life, Jappie identified Taariq Fielies at Milano as the team joker, describing him as someone who "used to grill everybody" without hesitation. Ebrahim Seedat earned the title of best dresser, while Jethren Barr from his time at Bidvest Wits was singled out as the worst, known for arriving at training in flip-flops, shorts, and a sweater in the rain.
Jappie added that he is still actively pursuing a return to the highest level of the game and has no plans to retire.
