The South African Football Association (SAFA) confirmed Pitso Mosimane as the new Bafana Bafana head coach on 1 September 2026, concluding weeks of drawn-out financial negotiations that nearly derailed his appointment entirely.
Mosimane will earn approximately R10 million per year, equivalent to around R833,000 per month, on a five-year contract. The agreement came after SAFA's opening proposal of R5 million annually was firmly rejected by his management, who reportedly described the offer as disrespectful given his standing in African and Middle Eastern football.
SAFA doubles salary offer to close the deal
After the initial figure was turned down, SAFA doubled its offer to R10 million, bringing both parties to an agreement. Despite the significant package, the salary remains well below what his predecessor, Hugo Broos, was taking home. The Belgian coach earned approximately R16.8 million per year, inclusive of bonuses, during his tenure with the national side.
Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie made his displeasure known publicly before the deal was finalised, criticising SAFA's handling of the negotiations. McKenzie argued that Mosimane should not have to justify his value and that his remuneration ought to match what Broos had been receiving.
Technical staff absorbed into SAFA structure
Beyond his personal salary, Mosimane secured a significant concession from SAFA during negotiations. The association agreed to absorb his preferred backroom staff into its organisational framework. His three-man technical team includes fitness coach Kabelo Rangoaga and performance analyst Musi Matlaba, both of whom have worked closely with him in previous roles.
