Itumeleng Khune: Kaizer Chiefs Legend Warns Ronwen Williams Despite Bafana Bafana’s Win Over Eritrea

  • Khune raised concerns about Ronwen Williams' performance during Bafana Bafana's 5-0 AFCON qualifier win over Eritrea
  • The former Bafana goalkeeper said Williams appeared overconfident and was not fully switched on at certain moments
  • Khune reminded Williams that Sipho Chaine is waiting in the wings and urged him to eliminate costly errors

Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has cautioned Ronwen Williams about complacency after South Africa's 5-0 victory over Eritrea in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

Speaking on SABC 2 following the Group D fixture, Khune acknowledged the comprehensive scoreline but said Williams' display gave him cause for concern in both halves of the game.

Khune questions Williams' concentration

Eritrea gave Bafana a nervy opening period, testing Williams on at least one occasion before the hosts asserted control. Despite the eventual comfortable margin of victory, Khune felt the Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper was not fully focused throughout.

"Yeah, it was a nervy start for Ronwen," Khune said. "Even in the second half, I was a bit worried. I think sometimes he's over confident, and that's when he makes mistakes."

Khune pointed to a specific moment in which Williams failed to tip the ball over the bar, instead gifting Eritrea a half-chance.

"Look at the other error, he wasn't switched on. Instead of tipping the ball over, he gave them half a chance," he said.

The experienced former shot-stopper suggested Williams may have underestimated the opposition, warning that such an attitude carries risk regardless of the opponent's quality.

Sipho Chaine waiting in the wings

Khune also reminded Williams that competition for the starting jersey remains very real.

"So I think he needs to eliminate that because maybe he was taking the opposition for granted because at the end of the day, if you concede like that, I mean, there's Sipho Chaine there waiting," he said.

Bafana's attacking display offered a stark contrast to the defensive uncertainty Khune flagged. Relebohile Mofokeng scored twice, while Sphephelo Sithole, Iqraam Rayners and Luther Singh each added a goal to give South Africa a commanding 5-0 result. The victory pushed Bafana to the top of qualifying Group D with six points from two matches.
