Police Give Latest Update After 17-Year-Old Boy Was Stabbed After Rugby Match in Western Cape

A 17-year-old boy was stabbed in the back on the grounds of Hoërskool Bredasdorp following a friendly rugby match on Saturday, August 8, 2026, prompting police to open a case of attempted murder.

The stabbing took place following an annual sporting fixture between Hoërskool Bredasdorp and Hoërskool Punt, a school based in Mossel Bay.

The South African rugby community recently lost former player Russell Nelson, who died a few days before celebrating his birthday, and also a young player who died during training.

Police provide update on incident

Provincial police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala confirmed the incident and clarified that the victim was initially reported to be 15 years old before his age was corrected to 17.

Gwala said the teenager suffered stab wounds to his back and was receiving medical treatment.

Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, while no arrests had been made at the time of reporting.

Bredasdorp School responds to stabbing

Hoërskool Bredasdorp has responded to the stabbing incident that took place on its premises, stressing that the alleged attacker was not a learner at the school.

In a statement shared on its Facebook page, the school explained that a child who was not affiliated with Bredasdorp allegedly stabbed a boy from Punt while on the school grounds.

The injured boy was taken to hospital for treatment and was reported to be in a stable condition. The school also confirmed that police are investigating the incident and wished the victim a swift recovery.

Authorities have yet to establish which school the injured boy attends, while it remains unclear whether the alleged attacker is enrolled at another school. Police have also not confirmed any arrests in connection with the stabbing.
