Piston van Wyk, a veteran of South African rugby who represented the Springboks as a hooker through much of the 1970s, died over the weekend. He was 83.

Van Wyk earned 15 Test caps for South Africa between 1970 and 1976, with his international career bookended by matches against New Zealand. He featured for Northern Transvaal and Natal during his playing days — the franchises now known as the Bulls and the Sharks respectively.

Renowned for his physicality and scrummaging ability, Van Wyk was among the South African squad that toured Australia in 1971 and later faced the touring British & Irish Lions in 1974, a series widely regarded as one of the most fiercely contested in Lions history.

SA Rugby president Mark Alexander confirmed his passing and paid tribute to the former forward's impact on the game.

The South African rugby community recently lost former player Russell Nelson, who died a few days before celebrating his birthday, and also a young player who died during training.
Rugby legend dies after cardiac arrest
Briefly News also reported that a rugby legend passed away at the age of 68, a few days after suffering cardiac arrest.
The rugby icon was unable to recover despite medical efforts to revive him after the cardiac arrest incident.
