A 19-year-old rugby player at Saint Mary's College in California has died after collapsing during a training session, prompting an outpouring of tributes from his teammates, fellow athletes, and national rugby officials.
Dominic Peterson, a member of the Saint Mary's Gaels rugby squad, was running in Moraga on Friday when he suffered what the college's president, Roger Thompson, described in a letter as a "medical crisis." He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died. The specific nature of the medical emergency has not been disclosed.
The Moraga-Orinda Fire Protection District confirmed to local media that crews had responded to the incident, though the department offered no further details.
Saint Mary's Gaels pay tribute
The rugby programme announced Peterson's passing on Saturday night, remembering him warmly in a social media post.

"Dominic's smile was contagious and one that would brighten a room when he entered," the team wrote. "He always gave 100% effort and encouraged those around him to do the same. Dominic will be in our hearts forever."
A memorial service was held on Saturday morning at the Saint Mary's College Chapel.
Other athletic programmes at the institution also expressed their grief. The Saint Mary's men's basketball team extended its condolences, emphasising the close bonds between sporting communities on campus.
"We are a family," the basketball programme said. "When one of us hurts, we all hurt." The team added that it stood together with Peterson's rugby teammates as they faced what it described as an "unimaginable loss."
College Rugby Association mourns
The College Rugby Association of America offered its own tribute to the young athlete.
Executive Director Paul Keeler said the organisation was grieving alongside Peterson's family, teammates, coaches, and classmates during what he acknowledged was a deeply painful time.
Peterson was 19 years old at the time of his death.
