Rugby player Dominic Peterson from Saint Mary’s College in California has died after collapsing during a training session, leading to an outpouring of grief from teammates, fellow athletes and rugby authorities.

The 19-year-old, who represented the Saint Mary’s Gaels rugby team, was taking part in a running session in Moraga on Friday when he suffered what college president Roger Thompson described as a medical emergency.
Peterson was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but later died. The college has not revealed the specific circumstances or nature of the medical emergency.
The Moraga-Orinda Fire Protection District confirmed that emergency crews attended the incident after receiving a call, although officials have not provided any additional information about what happened.

The South African rugby community recently lost former player Russell Nelson, who died a few days before celebrating his birthday, and also a young player who died during training.
Saint Mary's Gaels pay tribute
The rugby programme announced Peterson’s death on Saturday evening, paying tribute to him through a heartfelt social media message.
The team remembered him as someone whose infectious smile could light up any room and praised his commitment, saying he consistently gave his best and inspired his teammates to do the same. The programme also said Peterson would remain in their hearts forever.
A memorial service was held on Saturday morning at the Saint Mary’s College Chapel.
Other sporting programmes at the school also mourned Peterson’s passing. The Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team offered its condolences and highlighted the strong sense of unity shared by the school’s various sporting communities.
The basketball programme described the institution’s athletes as one family, stressing that the pain felt by one member was shared by everyone. The team also stood in solidarity with Peterson’s rugby teammates as they dealt with what it called an unimaginable loss.
College Rugby Association mourns
The College Rugby Association of America offered its own tribute to the young athlete.
Executive Director Paul Keeler said the organisation was grieving alongside Peterson's family, teammates, coaches, and classmates during what he acknowledged was a deeply painful time.
Peterson was 19 years old at the time of his death.
Rugby legend dies after cardiac arrest
Briefly News also reported that a rugby legend passed away at the age of 68, a few days after suffering cardiac arrest.
The rugby icon was unable to recover despite medical efforts to revive him after the cardiac arrest incident.
