Head coach Rassie Erasmus confirmed the decision during his team announcement on Tuesday. Marco van Staden has been named to start at the back of the scrum, with Paul de Villiers and Elrigh Louw lining up as flankers. André Esterhuizen will captain a side that features 13 changes from the previous starting XV.

Erasmus explains the bench decision
Erasmus explained that Jasper Wiese’s inclusion on the bench was largely a tactical decision aimed at maintaining balance within the squad. With a much-changed side taking the field, the Springboks coach felt Wiese’s experience could provide an important safety net if the team struggled to find its rhythm early on.

Erasmus said the plan was for the new combination to build momentum from the outset, but acknowledged that the unfamiliarity within the side could create difficulties as the match progressed. Should the game become more challenging, he viewed Wiese as an experienced option capable of coming on and helping the team regain control.

Wiese's leadership recognised
Erasmus also used the opportunity to underline how much Wiese has developed as a leader since becoming part of the Springbok setup. His progress has been significant enough that the loose forward was among the players considered for the captaincy in Perth.
The coach pointed to a noticeable change in Wiese’s communication over the past three years, saying the 29-year-old has become far more vocal and influential within the group. Erasmus suggested that when Wiese does speak, his contributions carry weight, highlighting the respect he has earned among his teammates.
His attitude to being named among the replacements was another quality Erasmus praised. Rather than resisting the decision, Wiese accepted that starting from the bench could benefit the team in this particular match. For Erasmus, that selflessness was another indication of how far the player has come, particularly as he prepares to reach the 50-Test milestone.
Springboks assistant coach Duane Vermeulen, speaking at a press conference on Wednesday 23 September 2026, reflected on Wiese's evolution as both a player and a leader within the squad.
