André Esterhuizen's first match as Springbok captain ended in a narrow 42-38 defeat to the Wallabies at Optus Stadium on Sunday. However, the result was far from the only talking point surrounding the Rugby Championship clash.

The appointment of Esterhuizen as South Africa's 68th Test captain came with regular skipper Siya Kolisi, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Jesse Kriel all absent from the touring squad.
Head coach Rassie Erasmus framed the selection as part of a deliberate effort to deepen the Boks' leadership group ahead of the 2027 World Cup, pointing to Esterhuizen's growth as Sharks captain over the past season.
Racial slur row resurfaces
The announcement immediately revived a 14-year-old disciplinary matter. In 2012, Esterhuizen, then an 18-year-old representing Klerksdorp High School at a match against Potchefstroom Gymnasium, was found guilty of directing a racial slur at opposing coach Thabo Molete.

He received an initial one-year ban, later reduced to six months on the condition that he complete a life-skills programme, and was dropped from that year's Craven Week squad.
A dramatic match that the Boks could not complete
On the field, Australia controlled much of the contest, building a commanding 42-17 advantage with roughly 10 minutes remaining. Tries from Harry Wilson, Max Jorgensen, Ben Donaldson and a brace from Len Ikitau, complemented by 17 points from scrumhalf Ryan Lonergan, put the result seemingly beyond doubt.
What followed was extraordinary. Referee Andrea Piardi issued four yellow cards to Wallabies players in a 12-minute window, reducing Australia to 11 men. Front-rowers Ox Nche, Wilco Louw and Malcolm Marx led a furious Springbok response from the bench, with a penalty try and scores from Morné van den Berg and Nche cutting the gap to four points.
The comeback stalled when an obstruction penalty involving Esterhuizen and replacement Quan Horn ended South Africa's final attacking opportunity. Australia held on 42-38 to retain the Nelson Mandela Challenge Plate.
The timing of Esterhuizen's role in the decisive penalty was not lost on social media. A post from ScrumAtMe Rugby, captioned
