The New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) announced on Saturday that former Balmain Tigers captain and NSW representative Trevor Ryan had died at the age of 72, following a battle with lung cancer.

Ryan made his first-grade debut for Balmain at 17 years old and went on to become one of the club's most recognised figures, combining versatility at both back-row and centre with consistent performances across nearly two decades of professional rugby league.

Trevor Ryan's career at Balmain and beyond

Ryan accumulated 196 first-grade appearances over the course of his career. The bulk of those came during two separate stints at Balmain, where he played 159 games between 1972 and 1982. The club appointed him captain in 1975 and again when he returned in 1982, a year in which he also led the reserve-grade side to a premiership title.

Tributes from clubs and Rugby League Organisations

The NSWRL led tributes following the announcement of his passing, expressing condolences to Ryan's loved ones. Balmain Tigers acknowledged his 159 appearances for the club and his contribution to rugby league in New South Wales, while offering support to his family and friends.

Balmain Junior Rugby League extended its condolences to Ryan's wife, Colette, as well as his children, grandchildren and wider circle. Rugby League Legends also paid tribute, reflecting on his journey from a teenage debutant at Balmain to NSW representative and club captain.

Ryan's connection to the game extended into the next generation through his son, Matt Ryan, who played for the Parramatta Eels during the 2012 and 2013 NRL seasons before moving to England's Super League, where he represented Wakefield Trinity, Featherstone Rovers and Bradford Bulls.
