Jake White has taken charge of Fiji as the Pacific nation looks to strengthen its challenge for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. The former Springbok coach was confirmed in the role by the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, following a recruitment process involving 31 applicants.

The 62-year-old replaces interim coach Senirusi Seruvakula, who oversaw Fiji's mid-year internationals and Pacific Nations Cup campaign.

Jake White brings World Cup-winning experience to Fiji

White's appointment reunites an experienced international coach with a major tournament challenge. He guided South Africa to the 2007 Rugby World Cup title, beating England 15-6 in the final in France. He later coached the ACT Brumbies, Montpellier and the Bulls, where he served as director of rugby from 2020 to 2025.

White said he wanted to build on Fiji's strengths rather than replace its distinctive style.

“I am not coming to Fiji to change what makes Fijian rugby special. I want to protect that identity, strengthen it and combine it with the structures, discipline and winning habits that will allow these players to express their talents on the biggest stage,” he said, as quoted by Rugby365.

Fiji's World Cup preparations begin immediately

White's first assignment is the centenary Test against Japan in Tokyo on 24 October 2026. Fiji will then face France, Ireland and Italy during November's international programme.

Fiji have been drawn alongside Spain, Canada and Argentina in Pool C at the 2027 World Cup. The tournament begins in October, with Fiji aiming to improve on their quarter-final appearance in 2023.
