Kaizer Chiefs FC is a South African professional football club based in Naturena, Johannesburg South, that plays in the Premier Soccer League. The team is nicknamed the Phefeni Glamour Boys, which refers to their stylish and attractive way of playing. The team also goes by the name AmaKhosi, which means “Lords” or “Chiefs” in Zulu. The club has won 13 league titles and one CAF Champions League title, making it one of the most successful and popular clubs in the country. The club’s home ground is FNB Stadium, which is also the second-biggest stadium in Africa.

History

Kaizer Chiefs FC was established in January 1970 by Kaizer “Chincha Guluva” Motaung, an ex-Orlando Pirates player who came back from playing in the United States for the Atlanta Chiefs of the North American Soccer League (NASL). He merged his own first name with the Atlanta Chiefs to form the name of Kaizer Chiefs. He was joined by several other people who played key roles in the formation and growth of the club, such as Gilbert Sekgabi, Clarence Mlokoti, China Ngema, Ewert “The Lip” Nene and Rabelani Jan Mofokeng. The club joined the National Professional Soccer League in 1985 and won its first league title in 1988. The club has also produced many notable players, such as Neil Tovey, Lucas Radebe, Patrick Ntsoelengoe, John “Shoes” Moshoeu, Shaun Bartlett, Siyabonga Nomvete and Doctor Khumalo.
