Kaizer Chiefs Legend Brian Baloyi Slams Brandon Petersen for Being 'Too Relaxed'

Kaizer Chiefs legend Brian Baloyi has publicly questioned captain Brandon Petersen's recent form, suggesting the goalkeeper appears too comfortable in his position despite a string of costly errors at the start of the new season.
Baloyi, who built his reputation with both Amakhosi and Bafana Bafana during a distinguished career, directed his criticism at Petersen following a mistake in Chiefs' 2-2 draw against Richards Bay. Petersen attempted to play out from the back, but the move backfired, gifting Nqaba Xulu the opportunity to open the scoring within the first eight minutes.
Amakhosi head coach Fernando Da Cruz came to the defence of Petersen after another blunder handed Golden Arrows a stunning MTN8 first-round victory at FNB Stadium on Sunday night.
Baloyi Questions Petersen's Attitude
Speaking to Soccerbeat, Baloyi acknowledged Petersen's impressive 2025/26 campaign, which earned him a Goalkeeper of the Season nomination, but said the 32-year-old was failing to build on that form.
"I'm disappointed in the goalkeeper Petersen. I know he was our best keeper last season, to a point where we were calling for him to be part of the Bafana Bafana, but he is not repaying the faith we have in him," Baloyi said.

The former Bafana Bafana shot-stopper went further, targeting what he described as a lack of urgency and communication from the Chiefs captain.
"He looks too relaxed to me. When you play under the circumstances we are playing today, under those conditions, you have to be vigilant, you have to communicate with the defence," Baloyi added.
Competition From Bvuma and Leaner
Baloyi believes Petersen can no longer afford to feel secure in his place as Chiefs’ first-choice goalkeeper. He called on Bruce Bvuma and Renaldo Leaner to increase the competition for the captain’s spot and force him to raise his level.
The Chiefs legend argued that the errors being made so early in the campaign were avoidable. He also questioned Petersen’s urgency and suggested that the goalkeeper’s seemingly relaxed approach could be contributing to his recent struggles.
With Bvuma and Leaner both waiting for an opportunity, Baloyi’s comments have put the spotlight on Fernando Da Cruz’s next selection. The Chiefs coach must now decide whether to stick with Petersen or hand one of his understudies a chance.
