After allegedly being ignored by a waitress at popular Port Elizabeth beach side bar Barney’s Tavern for over forty minutes, Akay Avakian and his wife claimed to give a bartender a one hundred percent tip for serving them drinks.
Avakian claims that the waitress denied serving them and writes that that she ignored the couple and played on her cell phone instead of attending to the couple when they walked in. The couple apparently had to ask her to clean the table they were sitting at while they waited for menus that were not offered and not received.
The couple claim they were discriminated against because they were black. The waitress allegedly offered great service to white patrons who entered the bar after the couple, whilst they waited.

In a Facebook post, Avakian writes that the bartender had to go around bar to offer the couple drinks. Grateful for the bartender’s humility and for him doing his job without discrimination, the couple allegedly gave him a hundred percent tip.
When the bartender questioned the reason for the large gratuity, the couple claimed it was because he was the only person in the bar who acknowledged them.
The couple apparently left the bar without ordering a meal and only ordered drinks which was served to them by the bartender, Garron.

Avakian claims that even their young son questioned why no one was helping them. As a parent, Avakian writes that it is difficult to have to explain such incidents to a young boy.
“Worst part is.. My son asked me.. Dad why didn't anyone help us.. Now how do explain this type of behaviour to him.. I'm honestly disgusted,” wrote Avakian.
In his post, Avakian asserts that people should not assume one’s financial status based on their skin colour. He further asserted that just 500 meters down the road, they received excellent service from Cubana Port Elizabeth.
Avakian’s post received tons of comments and reactions, with many Facebook users claiming to have received similar experiences at the establishment.
