Award-winning gospel artist Hlengiwe Mhlaba is alive and well, according to her publicist. False reports have been circulating on social media that the singer had passed away.
According to The Sowetan, the artist reassured her fans that she was okay following the reports of her supposed death.
Rumours began to spread that Hlengiwe had passed after a community radio host in KwaZulu-Natal posted on Facebook that she had died.
After the post began trending, Hlengiwe's friends and family began to receive calls from people who were mourning her. Hlengiwe's publicist Nkuleleko Khanyi has maintained that she is okay.
“I spoke to Hlengiwe on Saturday morning and when I was receiving these calls I was actually confused. All those calls came to me and it was scary," said her publicist Khanyi.
According to Khanyi, the rumour mill became worse on Sunday because that was when they received a higher volume of phone calls.
“I can confirm that Hlengiwe is fine and not even sick for that matter. We don’t know why a person would start such a rumour when people are really dying of Covid-19 and other diseases," said Khanyi.
Hlengiwe took to social media to speak on the rumours of her death and told people that they need to be sensitive to the families, friends and relatives of others before spreading fake news.
The publicist added that Hlengiwe is already in the studio working on her projects lined up for 2021.
