Despite the two having seen each other before, they got into a fight on their wedding night. Makoto, who starred in the e.tv drama Nikiwe, shared that she and Nkululeko disagreed about religion, but emphasised that they have since moved past the issue. She explained:
“The Bible says that a man must provide and a woman must submit, right? Imagine being asked if you’re willing to submit, but you don’t even know if the guy is willing to provide emotionally, financially, mentally, or physically, so I was taken aback by that. But as you have seen, we moved past that.”
Moreover, Makoto told Briefly News journalist Moroba Maepa that she had another disagreement with her husband's friend, Tshepo:
"My husband confided in Tshepo a lot. Our argument happened off camera when Tshepo said I shouldn’t be asking my husband about his whereabouts.
"He was basically saying Nkululeko can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, and I shouldn’t ask anything. When I reacted to that comment, he called me disrespectful."

Following in the footsteps of another reality TV star, Phumodi got candid about what her husband didn’t do when they first met, but has now learned thanks to a discussion they had about sex.
“Intimacy is important to me. If we can't connect emotionally, it won’t work. My husband didn’t believe in foreplay or kissing when we first met, so those are the things we had to learn about each other and overcome,” Phumodi said.

She said publicly disclosing relationship issues that weren't communicated with one's partner can lead to feelings of betrayal and ultimately damage the relationship.
"Long-term, it can damage the foundation of intimacy and safety in the relationship, so the best approach is rather one of transparency and honesty in a respectful, compassionate and nurturing manner," she explained.
