Legendary Actor John Kani Celebrates Granddaughter on Graduation From University of Pretoria

Legendary Mzansi actor John Kani is a proud grandfather. The Lion King star took to social media this week to give praise to his granddaughter.

The actor attended Simile Rafani, his grandchild's graduation ceremony at the University of Pretoria. It was a family affair as Goodman Xolisa Rafani, Nozuko Kani-Rafani, and Mandi Kani attended the festivities.

He could not hold himself back from sharing the proud moment on social media. Rafani obtained her LLB from the University of Pretoria, making her granddad proud.

"What a proud moment. My granddaughter, Ms Simile Rafani, at her graduation ceremony at the University of Pretoria- LLB. Congratulations mzukulwana wam (my grandchild.)"

On Instagram, Atandwa Kani revealed that she is the first lawyer in their family. He shared a photo of Simile and congratulated her parents as well.

"My niece, Simile “Simoimoi” Rafani has graduated!! Our first Lawyer in the family.. ASIZO’GEZA HEHAKE!! Congratulations to the proud parents @maperetsi & @nozukorafani0808 … HALALA SIMILE! HALALA!!!!!"

More reason for John Kani to celebrate

The actor had been announced as the latest inductee to join the Oscars voting body. Kani was elected to serve as a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The wonderful achievement came just in time for the actor's 82nd birthday on 30 August 2025.

"I have the honour and pleasure to announce that I have been elected to serve as a Member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences- Oscars. I promise to serve this institution with honesty and integrity."
