The music world is mourning the loss of award-winning Maskandi artist Scebi Dlamini, widely known by his stage name Inkosi Yamagcokama, who died in a car accident before he could see two of his biggest personal milestones come to fruition.
At the time of his death, Dlamini was in the process of completing his very first home in Msinga, his hometown in KwaZulu-Natal. The house, which he had been pouring his heart and resources into building, now stands unfinished, a painful reminder of the life he was carefully constructing outside of music. He was also engaged and had been making plans with his fiancée to formalise their relationship.

The fatal accident happened while Dlamini was en route to the Basadi Let's Dance Music Festival, held at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay. The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport confirmed his passing on Sunday, 9 August 2026, via its official Facebook page. The department shared a statement from MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, which confirmed that Dlamini died at the scene of the accident.
Three other occupants in the vehicle were rushed to hospital following the crash. Tragically, one of those individuals, later identified as Dlamini's colleague and close friend known as Gupta, also succumbed to his injuries.
A Life Cut Short at Its Brightest Point
What makes the loss all the more heartbreaking is the timing. Dlamini appeared to be at a pivotal chapter in both his personal and professional life. His home in Msinga was nearly ready, a project that symbolised his roots and his success. His engagement pointed to a future he had been quietly building alongside his career achievements as one of Maskandi music's celebrated voices.
The Maskandi genre, deeply rooted in Zulu cultural traditions, has long celebrated artists like Dlamini who carry its storytelling heritage forward. His stage name, Inkosi Yamagcokama, roughly translating to "King of the Dignified," reflected both the reverence his fans held for him and the identity he carried with pride.
His passing, alongside that of Gupta, has left the Maskandi community and music lovers across South Africa in profound grief.
