Entertainment journalist Phil Mphela has publicly addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding his interview with Thandeka, firmly pushing back against claims that she was mistreated from the moment she arrived. Writing on X in the early hours of 14 August 2026, he insisted that the narrative being circulated simply does not line up with what actually happened backstage.

Mphela wrote, adding that while some tension may have existed, nobody behaved negatively towards her upon arrival. He specifically pointed out that his co-host Shamiso even offered Thandeka a brush for her hair, framing this as evidence of goodwill rather than hostility. He wrote:

"Nobody was rude or cold towards Thandeka before the show. That is a lie."

According to Phil Mphela, the trouble only began once the cameras started rolling. He acknowledged that blame could be shared on both sides but was adamant that the pre-show version of events being spread online amounts to a fabrication. He also noted that a photo he shared of the group was taken after the shoot had wrapped, suggesting the atmosphere had settled by the end. He added:

Mzansi takes sides on the Thandeka saga

Reactions on X painted a deeply divided picture. Several users sided with Phil, arguing that Thandeka's own words never actually used the word 'rude.'

Shareefa_B weighed in:

"No one who was in that room has said that anybody was rude to her, including Thandeka herself. She used different words to describe the same thing you're saying, and that is that there was hostility. Nothing good was going to come out of that interview based on that tone alone."

Moipone_Mathaha added:

"Feelings are valid, but they don't automatically rewrite what happened. And if 8 people were in that room, surely the facts can be separated from everyone's individual perception."

However, others were far less sympathetic to Phil's account.

Papenma fired back:

"Sir, we all watched the show; Ms Ringleader was rude and throwing shade at Thandeka from the beginning, and this is based on factual footage. You can defend all you want, but we all saw it!"

BaneoTax wrote:

"Well done to Thandeka; she's given you guys numbers. We could see and sense the hostility through our TVs; the gaslighting made it worse. We all saw your show when she was called a liar from the Vaal."

Collen_sambo2 was blunt:

"You gossiped about her in her absence but can't speak in her presence."
