Veteran Uzalo actor Simphiwe Majozi has spoken candidly about the profound impact the popular SABC1 soapie has had on his life, crediting it with unlocking talents he never knew he possessed. The KwaZulu-Natal-born star, who joined the show in 2015, is now one of its longest-serving cast members and has grown well beyond acting since his debut.

Speaking to DailySUN, Majozi reflected on a creative journey that has taken him from a soapie set to comedy stages and a music studio.

How S'busiso inspired Simphiwe

Majola plays S'busiso on Uzalo, a petty criminal who found religion and became a pastor. Long before the conversion, though, the character's comedic edge left audiences hooked.

"S'busiso was a comedic thug before he became a pastor. He never took anything seriously and would crack jokes while committing crime. His signature laugh used to leave viewers in stitches. Even when I walked in the streets, people would ask me to do the laugh; it was then that I knew my work was being noticed."

That public recognition pushed Majozi towards stand-up comedy. He has since become a regular on the gig circuit, performing alongside some of South Africa's most recognisable comedians and building a following through popular social media skits.

Bringing his musical talents to life

Music was always part of Majozi's background. Growing up in the church gave him a foundation in performance, but comedy was the unexpected gift.

"More than an actor, I'm also a comedian and an actor. I've always known that I was a talented musician as I grew up going to church, but I didn't know I could tell jokes and make people laugh."

In 2021, he made his musical debut with the single Nizobona Ngomopho, which was later used as a background track on Uzalo itself, bringing his artistic journey full circle.

Majozi, who opened a restaurant called Sbu&Ration’s Eatery in 2024, left no doubt about where he places the credit for all of it.

"I can safely say Uzalo shaped me. I am where I am today because that telenovela gave me a chance."
