The Scorpion Kings turned FNB Stadium into a near R200 million economic powerhouse for Gauteng last weekend, with Gauteng Tourism confirming the concert's significant financial footprint across the province.

The annual showcase, headlined by amapiano heavyweights DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small, pulled in more than 70 000 fans and featured a star-studded lineup that included Nasty C, Kamo Mphela, Young Stunna, and A-Reece, among others.

What the numbers show

According to Sunday World, Gauteng Tourism put the event's direct revenue at R150 million, with a further R49 million flowing into the broader local economy through accommodation, transport, food, merchandise and related visitor expenditure. Gauteng Tourism spokesperson Barba Gaoganediwe said the weekend proved what major events can do for the province's profile and its hospitality sector. Gaoganediwe said:

"The event also reinforced Gauteng's positioning as the global home of Amapiano. As the genre continues to dominate stages, playlists and dance floors around the world, Gauteng remains its cultural birthplace, creative engine and commercial home. What unfolded at FNB Stadium was more than a concert. It was a global cultural homecoming.”

A big weekend for Gauteng tourism

Scorpion Kings Live was not the only major drawcard that weekend. The Africa Aerospace and Defence Expo at the Waterkloof Air Force Base in Centurion attracted an estimated 80 000 visitors, while Mamelodi Sundowns faced Al Ahli Saudi in a FIFA Intercontinental Cup clash at Loftus Versfeld.

Gaoganediwe noted that the combination of music, sport and business tourism events allowed Gauteng to tap into several distinct visitor markets simultaneously, maximising economic benefit across a single weekend.
