Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo was among six people killed on the evening of Wednesday, 30 September 2026, when a helicopter came down in the rural Marondera area. There were no survivors. Police confirmed emergency services reached the scene that same evening and that investigations into the cause of the crash had been launched.
A ZBC News field reporter filmed on location at the crash site pointed to poor weather conditions and pilot error as possible contributing factors. Light rain showers and high humidity were recorded in the region at the time of the crash. However, authorities have been careful to stress that no official cause has been confirmed, and that forensic and technical investigations must be completed before any conclusion is drawn.

Chivayo's brother also appeared in separate footage suggesting that weather may have played a role, though that account similarly remains unverified.

Social media reacts to the fatal crash
The crash triggered widespread discussion on social media, with many Zimbabweans questioning how the flight was allowed to proceed under the reported conditions.
@sa_makoni raised concerns about the security arrangements, writing:
"Were these helicopters not supposed to fly in a formation? How were they then providing security if they were that distant apart as to go first to Harare, then come back by road? Weird!!"
@james_n94 reflected on the final moments of those on board:
"This means Chivayo and his wife saw death coming. Possibly a good 3-5 minutes in terrible weather before the eventual crash. What a cruel and punishing way to die. It must have been traumatic."
@nitrozane was less sympathetic, suggesting:
"I would not be surprised if the pilots raised alarm, but Chivayo, in his arrogance, insisted. He learnt nothing from multiple crashes under similar circumstances of weather. Thought he was above nature. And he found out! Helicopters are agile but fickle things in bad weather."
@Chivaz_ZW questioned whether proper pre-flight procedures were followed:
"Aren't pilots supposed to check the weather forecasts and reports before taking off? Yatova pilot error kaiyi."
