Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo gained thousands of Instagram followers in the hours after news of his death broke, a bittersweet surge of attention that highlighted just how wide his public profile had grown.

Chivayo, who would have turned 46 in November, died on Wednesday evening, 30 September 2026, when the helicopter he was travelling in crashed in rural Marondera. His wife Lucy also perished in the accident. The aircraft came down at approximately 5 PM while the couple were en route to Harare, according to family spokesman Herbert Chivayo.

Wicknell Chivayo helicopter crash details

Police confirmed the crash shortly after it occurred but did not release the identities of those on board at the time. It was not until Thursday, 1 October 2026, that Zimbabwe's Youth Minister Tino Machakaire publicly confirmed the names of those killed, sharing a tribute video on Facebook that included photos of the victims.

Screenshots of Chivayo's Instagram profile, captured before and after the news broke, show a visible jump in his follower count, rising from 696,000 to 703,000 as the tragedy spread across social media. The jump reflected the wave of attention his passing drew, with users flocking to his page after hearing the news.

Chivayo had cultivated a significant social media presence, with his verified Instagram account describing him as a father and a self-described "miracle baby" who refused to lose. He was followed by public figures including South African musician Big Zulu.

Known for his flamboyant lifestyle and controversial business dealings, Chivayo was one of Zimbabwe's most talked-about public figures. His death, alongside that of his wife, sent shockwaves through the country and beyond.
