The murder trial of rapper Kiernan "AKA" Forbes and businessman Tebello "Tibz" Motsoane got underway at the Durban High Court on Monday, 5 October 2026, though proceedings were far from straightforward on the first day.
AKA's mother, Lynn Forbes, spoke to eNCA ahead of the trial, making clear she had braced herself for complications.
"I understand that, you know, the legal process takes its own time and the delays happen. So, for me, I came for one, two reasons only, and that was to be here for Tibz and for Kiernan, to be here with, you know, for both sides," she told the broadcaster.

"With Sylvester, I always felt a little bit guilty that he lost his son, because my son was supposed to be the one," she said, before expressing her gratitude to the legal team and the police investigators working the case.
Sylvester Motsoane had previously stated publicly that he would not set foot inside a courtroom until the matter reached an actual trial. When that day finally arrived, it came with an added layer of personal grief. He disclosed that the 5 October trial date coincided with the anniversary of his wife's passing.
